I really enjoy this series. You are a good orator, no “and”, or “aahhh”, in the narration. I have over the past few years read a lot of books dealing with the early history of the church. The history of the church is not the squeaky-clean history that was portrayed in primary, sunday school and all other church sponsored teaching. Although now on “History of the Saints” and the “Joseph Smith Papers” a little of the honest history is beginning to be published by the church, but they seem to still go with mostly the “convenient truth”.
    thanks

Thanks for doing these. The sisters, Almera, Marina Nancy, and Delcena were sisters to my great great great grandfather Joel H Johnson.

Well, cancel that previous comment. I guess Marinda Nancy is from a different Johnson family.

Marinda is my great, great, great grandmother. Before listening, I was curious as to if you would include her obituary or parts of it. From my understanding, early on while Joseph Smith was living on her father’s property, he was warned by her brother or brothers to stay away from Marinda. Also, Smith told Orson Hyde he was not to marry Marinda. Orson did so anyway. Lo and behold, a couple months later he was sent away to England on a mission. During this time Joseph claims to have received Temple sealing Revelation and had Miranda sealed to him in Orson’s absence. The significance of the obituary… Is that in her obituary, it says the night Joseph was pulled out of her father’s guest house, that mob was actually organized and headed up by her brother. His motivation? They had a surgeon with them and their intention was to castrate Joseph, as they were sick and tired of his womanizing behaviors. The surgeon chickened out, so they tarred and feathered him instead.

I recently was given Marinda’s trunk she crossed the plains with, by my mother. My mother’s grandmother is the granddaughter of Marinda. Polygamy and early church history, while hard for me to accept and can trigger anger and disgust, I also embrace as my family history. As you can imagine, and probably know, it evokes a lot of crazy and frustrating emotions at times.

I would love to connect with you or anyone else with connection to Miranda Hyde or information on her. I have been hesitant to really open my eyes and look for fear of anger I don’t know what to do with. But, I think I’m at a point where I am ready to dive into this messy history.

I live in Saratoga Springs, Utah.
